Pueblo y Salud in the Antelope Valley is implementing a 2 year project to get flavored alcohol, tobacco and vaping products that target underage youth off the shelves in communities of Palmdale where alcohol and tobacco outlets are concentrated.
Pueblo y Salud in the Antelope Valley has worked to reduce alcohol availability in communities that experience alcohol outlet density and the resulting problems like extreme high violent crime rates, DUI arrests, accidents and property damage, etc. This is a particular problem in zip code 93550 in the city of Palmdale where numbers of liquor/convenience stores are 5 time greater than the other zip codes of the City. It is of particular concern because of the many grammar and high schools that are near these outlets and the impact this is having on our children. Our effort is policy focused and has resulted in adoption of strong alcohol control policy in 2015. However, like so many other communities in Los Angeles County, these policies have not been implemented or enforced. For this reason, PyS AV decided to take the initiative through their Flavored Alcohol, Tobacco and Vaping Product Reduction Project and, once again, assist the City by ensuring the single-serve ban provision of the existing Alcohol Ordinance is enforced. Essentially, this will entail youth and parents engaging alcohol and tobacco establishments and asking them to voluntarily take down alcohol and tobacco products known to be consumed by large percentages of undergae youth. Eventually, this effort will attempt to place a 10 year moratorium on new off-sale (liquor stores) applications in zip code 93550.
