Our Public Health programs seek to improve community standards to address alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other drug-related issues. Our Prevention efforts focus on ways to prevent youth access, reduce availability and change social norms in Los Angeles County communities.
Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Program:
Retail Education: PYS is working with Alcohol Retailers in the city of San Fernando, Pacoima, North Hollywood, Toluca Lake, and Studio City by providing Responsible Beverage Services (RBS) training to liquor store personnel by teaching retailers how to sell alcohol responsibly to their customers. Helping retailers implement best practices for limiting sales to youth and reducing underage drinking in our communities.
Education Prevention Classes/ Workshops: PYS conducts numerous prevention classes/ workshops that focus on providing community education to increase public awareness at Middle and High Schools:
- Risks of prescription drug abuse
- Safe use/ storage/ drug disposal programs for OTC/ Prescriptions pills
- Risks of marijuana and access
- Risks of alcohol consumption among youth and availability
- Provide available resources for help
Prevention Community Council (PCC): The goal is to implement policies that will improve the safety and wellness of the community. The council invites community residents, parents, youth, agencies, schools, law enforcement, and city officials to discuss how we can work together to address community concerns related to alcohol, marijuana, prescription pills, tobacco, and other drugs.
Coalition Groups: Our coalitions work on local, city (Los Angeles Drug and Alcohol Policy Alliance), county and statewide (California Alcohol Policy Alliance) alcohol and other drug-related issues to improve the quality of life among our youth and their families.
Tobacco Prevention Program:
PYS works with community members, local organizations and key decision makers to advocate for healthier tobacco-related policies. PYS works closely with retailers to reduce youth access to tobacco products and also, focuses on reducing exposure to second-hand smoke in Los Angeles County.
Coalition groups: PYS conducts monthly meetings to discuss different strategies to advocate for healthier tobacco-related policies.
Educational Presentations: PYS conducts educational presentations to educate community members about the harms of tobacco and second-hand smoke.
